Inside the standards

A former member of BSI JPEL/18

JPEL/18 is the British Standards committee, run jointly with the IET, that contributes to the IEC standards for electrical installations in ships, the IEC 60092 series that class rules lean on. Having sat on it means reading a rule for what it is trying to achieve, not just what it says, and knowing where the margins are when a yard and a surveyor disagree.

C.01Drawing reviewYard and supplier drawings checked against class, code and flag requirements before approval: single-lines, cable schedules, protection settings, HV arrangements.

C.02Gap analysisFor a refit, a change of flag or an older vessel: what the installation is, what the rules now require, and a costed list of the difference.

C.03Survey preparationTest procedures, records and witness arrangements so that class and flag surveys close on the day rather than raise conditions.

C.04Delivery documentationThe certificates, records and as-built documentation that have to exist before a yacht can be delivered and operated with guests.
